My Brooklyn

Readers Report

David Guttman

I grew up in Flatbush; attended P.S. 153, still remember their "fight" song, Cunningham Junior High, and Madison High (class of 1960), spent all my teenage evenings walking up and down Kings Highway, in whatever the latest fashion trend was to annoy our parents. I lived in the same apartment house (1205 Ave. R) from newborn through sophomore in college, and hung out with the same five boys from cradle to college. Have managed to locate one but if anyone knows where Richard Lillienfeld is get this to him. Since Brooklyn I went to St. Lawrence University ('64) and Cornell ('66, M.S.) and Tulane (Ph.D.), then went to Colombia to study parasites, then went to med school in Nebraska (Creighton). Presently I'm a pediatrician in Tallahassee, Florida, and we just finished recounting votes so I have time for this message. My Brooklyn was Coney Island, Steeplechase, Nathan's, Prospect Park, and fishing with my uncle who was a G.P. at Sheepshead Bay. The fireworks from the roof during the summer and all the kids going "oooh ahhhhh, that was a good one!" at each firework. They have fireworks here too, and I taught my kids the "firework chant" but it's not the same.

Hennie Newman (was Chichilnitzky) continues . . .

I have written before about 537 Herzl Street. Today I'm remembering camp H.E.S., another Eden. We were sent there for three-week sessions and it was heaven! I remember Aunt Kitsie (Ruth Kitses) and many wonderful summers of singing dopey camp songs and exploring Bear Mountains. Were you there too? Please e-mail if you were.

Hi. Grad, James Madison '42—anyone still around? Kings Hwy. Kids from East 8th St., between Ave. U & V. Wonderful memories from the 1930s. Boy, we are old! Kelly Park basketball, first grad class from Cunningham Jr. High. Summers at Manhattan Beach, egg creams, charlotte russe, Nathan's hot dogs. Love to hear from someone from that era. The young people from way back then—Jerry Mason, Heshy Baron, Mikey Vincenco. Thelma Siegal, Dorothy Clements, Florence Bomser, Thelma Leinwand, " Westy" Greenblatt, Gladys (Dad was police Captain). Cooky's Rests, Biff Shapiro.

I'm far away in the Napa Valley of CA. Would love to hear from anyone.
