I grew up in East New York in the 50s and early '60s where everyone new each other on their block. As ther were at two generations living in each home, you couldn't get away with much. Someone's bubbie or nanna was always watching from a window.

We had frappes, not sundaes and shoe leather, not fruit roll-ups.

Ice cream cones were 10 cents, a penny more for a sugar cone and another penny for sprinkles. And Mr. Klein the candy store owner let us dip our own cones into the sprinkles so that we could make sure that we got the most coverage.

We used to drive to my bubbie's apartment which was way over past Ocean Parkway. From there we would ride the McDonald Avenue trolley to Coney Island.

I can still smell the mixture of ozone from the "el", popcorn, corron candy and the ocean that greated us as we pulled into Stillwell Avenue.

Your site brings back wonderful memories. Would you have any idea where I might find a photo of the Patio Movie Theater which was on Flatbush near Beekman Place? I think it closed in 1960.

2808 Fort Hamilton Parkway, riight on the corner of East 5th St. I lived there from 1935 to 1954 and my mother lived there from about 1908 till she passed away in 1965. That part of Brooklyn was in Windsor Terrace which ran from Vanderbilt St. on the north to Caton Ave. on the south and Prospect Park on the east to Greenwood Cemetary on the west.

I graduated from Immaculate Heart of Mary School in 1949 then went to St. Michael's DHS until I failed Latin in the 2nd year and had to leave. I graduated from Erasmus Hall in 1953.

I enjoyed reading all the messages on this site about everyone's Brooklyn. I remember walking, bike riding, and horse back riding through Prospect Park as well as riding my bike and horses along Ocean Parkway all the way to Coney Island.

I worked the four years I was in high school as a delivery boy for the Rainbow Cleaners on E 18th St. and Church Ave.

I now live in San Diego, CA but visit the old neighborhood whenever I visit my brother who now lives on Staten Islalnd. I just love to walk around the streets of my youth and think about the good times I had growing up there.

I tried to e-mail two others who indicated they had lived in Windsor Terrace but the messages were returned to me as undeliverable. I would love to hear from anyone who would care to e-mail me.

God Bless!
