Jerry Baranow

As a kid back in the thirties, my world was St. Johns Place between Troy Ave. and Utica bounded by Lincoln Place and Eastern Pkwy. I could travel on my own as a 5, 6, 7, and 8 year old with total impunity and safety. When it was time to come home I could here my mother's voice from our tenament window calling for me. I would always hear her and go running home except one time I couldn't respond because I had been smacked by a car while running across Lincoln Place. It took quite a while for her to find me but in a few weeks I was good as new. I attended P.S. 167—as did all the kids in the local area. I lived at 1284 & 1320 St. Johns Place and can recall Thelma Pelish practicing her soprano singing voice resounding throughout the streets. She later went to Hollywood and did make a few movies. I believe she died in 1988. I loved the movies and went to the Utica (itch) and I believe the ritzy Congress theater. Well I could go on but enough is enough.
