My Brooklyn

Readers Report

Morris A. Cintron

I grew up mainly in Bensonhurst but my most vivid memories are from living in Brighton Beach and Coney Island. I spent many a day walking the beach from Bay 1 to Sea Gate selling sodas and pretzels and knishes to the beachgoers. We would make good money and after a shower we'd all head to Coney for food and to ride the rides. I was in love with a girl named Barbara R. and we would go to the Brooklyn Trolley to see bands. I caught Corky Lang's drumstick for her when we saw Mountain play. She really was a great friend. I know she still lives on Homecrest Avenue in Sheepshead Bay. If you ever see this I just want you to know I am married to a wonderful woman and I have a beautiful three-year-old daughter named Emily Rose. And to think they said I couldn't have children. So much for miracles. Everyone keep writing and keep this page filled with great memories.

Living in the projects on Avenue X and Nostrand Ave. during the late 50s and early 60s, along about 7:30 pm during a long summer day, a group of guys would get together almost directly under my window and sing doo-wop accapella as I would be going to sleep. What a beautiful way to end the day! A serenade that I will never forget.

From 1957 to 1980: P.S. 321. White shirts and ties required. Met Food on 7th Ave. Bohack too (King Korn stamps). Pino's Pizza (best ever). Brooklyn Ethical Culture School. Brooklyn Friends School. The Good Humor men we knew by name. The guy who sold Sabaret hot dogs on 3rd Street and Prospect Park West. Lots of Vietnam vets on line at the methadone clinic, or sitting along the wall surrounding Prospect Park getting stoned. Very sad. Throwing dirt balls at the "Parkies." Sawdust on the butcher's floor. Personal service everywhere you went, even as a kid.

Fire escapes and johnny pumps. Needick's, Wetson's, Chock Full 'o Nuts on Flatbush Avenue. Every 4th of July seemed like the world was exploding. Such fireworks! Feeling sad seeing the changes from the "old" style to the "new." Looking out my parents' living room window at the Litchfield mansion on Christmas and knowing that this was heaven, this was Brooklyn, this is a place I would never forget.
