Andrew B. Axler

Brighton Beach. Born there, raised there, on Brighton 11th Street across from the Brighton Beach Baths.

Mrs. Stahl's Knishes. They were the best when my Aunt Fanny (the real Mrs. Stahl—no kidding) made them herself. Now they are a shadow of themselves, because there is no Stahl connected with the store anymore, although her daughters are still alive. So is her sister, my mother.

Lincoln High School, and P.S. 225K, where I went to school. Places of Legend if ever there were any.

Bay2. My old hangout.

That's all for now.

Lana Foster

Hi. My boss sent me your web address today and I'm just thrilled.

Gosh, the memories are just great. For the last 9 years I've lived in Seattle, Wa., but was born and lived in Brooklyn for 50. I go "home" every year, since my whole family still lives in Brooklyn. My dad had a candy store/luncheonette in Borough Park but when we tried to open Borough Park and Bensonhurst we can't; it won't let us.

Is there any subscription I can subscribe to for updates or old times in Brooklyn? Just wanted to say I love this stuff. Thank you very much for bringing back such wonderful memories.

Martin Brandfon

Brandfon Photos, located at 860 Manhattan Ave. next to St. Anthony's Church in Greenpoint, was the family business of my father Philip (retired 1979) and my grandfather Jacob (d. 1951). Jacob's wife Mollie, my grandma, is alive and well at 102 years of age. She can still regale us with stories of taking communion pictures of dozens of kids on Sundays. I remember playing as a boy among the floodlights in the studio as brides combed their hair in the little dressing room before my dad would preserve the day in a package of black & white 8x10's & 5x7's that would end up on many a bedroom dresser. We took passport pics and photos of police and firemen who waited for us to develop the prints in a small darkroom in the back. I worked there at Christmas and weekends until the place closed and my mom and dad retired to Florida. Remember me? I never learned Polish!
