My Brooklyn

Readers Report

Ed Agard-Carolyn Hiers Agard

We lived on Dean Street, Bklyn. We remember the candy store—Manny's—where you could get candy for a penny and read the comic books, without buying; the drugstore on the corner; and the Rand cleaners in the middle of the block. We were sweethearts at 5 and married at 48 after years of separation. Our hearts were with each other the same as they still are for Dean Street. My family still lives in the same house (ED). We remember the nights in the summer when we played old lady witch and kick the can. We held our own parades up and down the block with garbage cans as drums. Those were the days, we would sit on Carolyn's steps and play school. We attended P.S. 41, St. Gregori, Prospect Heights and Wingate. We're still here on Atlantic Ave. because we are a part of Brooklyn.

1388/1390 Dean Street is where my Brooklyn began and my dreams still visit: sitting on the stoop watching my friends jump double dutch, the wheels on my steel skates sticking from the rust that accumulated there—pitching me onto the sidewalk; yelling EYOCKEE to let my buddies know that I was outside; jumping from bannister to bannister on the Federal type houses; hating the walk to St. Gregory the Great; hating even more sitting in Sister Jerome's class; loving the feel of a Knickerbocker candy in my mouth (whatever happened to them?); even more loving the sounds, the heat, the street light when it finally came on during the hot summer nights. . . . That Brooklyn is still in my heart. . . .

Growing up in Brooklyn—a book worth writing. Pitkin Avenue, the Kishke King, Ebbets Field and Brooklyn Tech. It was a place that built character and fond memories. The neighborhood guys in Brownsville, Betsy Head Park and those great stickball games that we all took so seriously. The best of friends debating, arguing with healthy enthusiasm—Who's the best centerfielder in the majors? Remember standing on the steps of Brooklyn College the day the Giants won the pennant in 1951. Wow.
